Perilous Dreams
Dec. 27th, 2004 10:32 amI dreamt I could draw the Sword in the Stone last night.
I don't normally remember much of my dreams; this is more a function of me not getting enough sleep than anything else, to be honest. In an ideal world I would get eight to nine hours a night - what my body seems to require - but I tend to get six to seven except on the weekend, when I'll sleep up to twelve or fourteen hours (the latter if I nap). This was a particularly striking image, too. The sword was beautiful and heavy and rich. There were no jewels, but the ornamentation carved into the hilt and crossguard was fantastic. The sword was held to an ornamented stone with intricate carvings and sworls, and there was a seal that held the two together. Interestingly, the wise old man next to me said that the seal would dissolve when I took hold of the hilt, but when I reached out to touch it I found I could remove it easily and thus still have the sword and the seal.
The sword was very heavy and felt oddly right in my hand. The seal could attach to the belt I was wearing, and was a comforting weight as well.
For those who know the movies instead of the myths, the Sword in the Stone was not Excaliber - that came from the Lady in the Lake. The sword in the stone was for "the purest," or something similar, and like the Perilous Seat and the other Perilous trappings, it was meant for the person who had the best chance of finding the Grail, Percival. I don't recall if it had a name, but from what I've seen it's incredibly beautiful.
It was just a snippit of dream, but I find myself dwelling on it hours later. What an amazing image.
Now I want that sword!!!
