Unintended Consequences

One of the aspects of being a vitki - a rune mage - which has always both intrieged and frightened me is the capacity to fuck up. It's like walking a high wire without a net, but if I go down I may take someone with me. The first bindrune I ever seriously made to do something was supposed to be a healing bindrune; it ended up actually being a "slaughter the old to bring forth the young" bindrune, and was promptly disposed of. Opps. A later fertility rune turned out better, but I've taken care with my bindings ever since.
I think prayer has a similar aspect, but the difference is the intervention of the gods. Since prayer is really a petition to the gods to do something, there's an intermediary to keep you from screwing up too badly. I wonder sometimes, though, if the gods don't let things through in order to let a lesson be learned.
