The Powerless, Average Person
Jun. 30th, 2006 10:27 amThe second episode of Ghost In the Shell: Second Gig is an interesting one, and one that I personally find highly resonant to the circumstances I find myself in. It tells the story of Gino, a war veteran and pilot for a business official who works in the media. He is disatisfied with his life, but in such a way that renders him impotent; this impotence is underlied by a more physical reality of such that comes out in the course of the episode.
He lives in violent fantasies. Every day, sometimes several times a day, he imagines violent terrorist acts that often include his own death. And yet, when snapped back to reality, he is mild, polite, and prone to cowardice and begging. His bravado is all internal; his violence is siphoned into fantasy; he can't even cancel a donation effectively.
The Director of the series, in an interview in the extras, commented that he felt Gino spoke for the average people living in the world whose disatisfaction is so generalized that it leaves them without any clear course of action, and in fact leads them to criticize anyone who [b]does[/b] try to act. I have to say that, far more than the average people acting in unspoken consesus which was the theme brought up in the first episode, this speaks to how I feel about the world right now - powerless, impotent, unimportant; grandious in my own mind, but when called to act a coward.
I have a feeling this is going to be a very interesting season.

And on an oddly similar note, OMG Girlz Don’t Exist on teh Intarweb!!!!1. I think the statement "Woah, you're a girl. That surprises me, you are actually a good priest. No one has died." was what made me die a little inside. Even the nice people with good grammar think women suck.
