I have a new beloved poet.

Who Said It Was Simple
by Audre Lorde

There are so many roots to the tree of anger
that sometimes the branches shatter
before they bear.
Sitting in Nedicks
the women rally before they march
discussing the problematic girls
they hire to make them free.
An almost white counterman passes
a waiting brother to serve them first
and the ladies neither notice nor reject
the slighter pleasures of their slavery.
But I who am bound by my mirror
as well as my bed
see causes in color
as well as sex

and sit here wondering
which me will survive
all these liberations.

You haven't read AUDRE LORDE??????

*sweatdrop* I'd never heard of her before. I know, I fail as a feminist.

I'm not contemptuous, I'm envious: you have some incredible reading ahead. I'd start with Sister Outsider. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0895941414/qid=1146148755/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-8579345-6265722?s=books&v=glance&n=283155
This is taught in a TON of women's studies' classes, so there are always lots of used copies avaialble, and the library should have it.

And I haven't read more than a few of her poems, so you can take out her collected poems and then feel superior to me. How 'bout that. :)

I never took any women's studies classes, so I suppose that explains it. I picked up most of my favorite poets through independant surveys, though, so I'm surprised - with how powerful her poetry is - I never read it before.

I'll share with you the best bits! I can only find six or seven of her poems online, and that is a crime that must be rectified!

not all as political as lorde but....

if you would like to add some poets you might not have run across to your repitoire:
Maxine Kumin
Sharon Olds
Ntozake Shange (who is the most political of the 3, and I've had some version of her "with no immediate cause" up in my workspace for the last 3 years. that poem you can consistently google saerch if you haven't read it...)

Interesting. Ca me plait. Anyway, just thought I would post and see how things are going. Also, I am here to inquire as to when this summer I could come crash at your splendid abode, eat your food, and be converted to the splendid ways of thyself. I'm also going to contact Ellen, but I thought it would be more pleasurable to discuss such arrangements with you one-on-one instead of through her. ASAP would be preferable, since I am trying to balance work, dual enrollment, and a side trip to Missouri. If you need a more specific time frame than 'this summer' I can probably scrounge one up in a few days. Otherwise, the dice are in your hands. *Runs off to watch Chrono Crusade.*

The first week in August would be perfect for me. I need to double check with the parental units though, so it's not quite a final.
