What part of "We are a research and development company" did you not understand? Yet again, someone refuses to believe me when I say we don't have a marketing department, and then wants to talk to the president. Yeah, sure, I'll just get him right on the line for you then! I mean, he has nothing better to do than take marketing calls; it's not like he's an engineer who works or something. And, of course, you don't want to leave a message; you'll call back later. Sorry, honey, he'll still be in his meeting. It's a long meeting; one for the rest of his life.

People, believe me when I say we don't market things.

I discovered a lovely new manga recently called Petshop of Horrors. The premise is that D (our lovely and creepy main character) owns and runs a pet shop that caters to the dreams and loves of people, often with disastrous consequences. It's haunting, psychological, and decidedly bloodthirsty. I can't help but wonder what pet I would take home from the Petshop... personally, I'd rather work there, but not take home a pet.

  • What went wrong in the last century is a fascinating political argument. I haven't a clue if I agree or not, yet; I've only read it once. I highly recommend you read it too, however!

One of my co-workers listened to me get rid of someone who simply couldn't believe we didn't have a sales department (but, don't you sell things? (me) No, we don't. We're research and development.) and commented afterward that I got rid of people faster than anyone she'd heard, yet I was still polite. She loves to listen to me take telemarketing calls because of this, actually.

When someone asks to speak to the marketing department, say "speaking." And then feel free to say "no" to whatever telemarketing scheme they have. If they know your company that little, they rarely have legitimate business with you. (Kind of the way I screen calls at home -- if they can't pronounce my rather simple last name, I doubt they offer too much of value. Though I have to at least listen, on the off chance that it's a potential job calling for an interview.)

I should try that next time; I'd at least get an interesting spiel. The only thing I worry about is that they'll argue with me when I say we're not interested. *sweatdrop* I've had that happen before.

They can argue, but explain that you are _very_ busy, and terminate the call. When they call back, who will they get, hmmm? When you're the only game in town...

I temped at a company in Colorado Springs years back and got a funny story. The receptionist had an emergency doctor appointment, so the head of purchasing agreed to fill in. A telemarketer called, and was extremely rude when told the company was not interested. About an hour later -- when the head of purchasing was back at her desk -- she got a call from the same guy, who wanted to complain about the "rude secretary." The head of purchasing then blistered his ear before refusing him a second time. :)

That reminds me of when I was told that receptionists don't hear about most things. Unforunately, I also held every position he asked for after that (office manager, etc...). Silly salesman.
